About Opals: Opal is one of the rarest and most valuable of all gemstones. Some opals reach prices in excess of twenty five thousand dollars per carat. Opal is ade of tiny, microscopic spheres of silica. When white light enters an opal, it hits the spheres of silica. The spheres split light into rays of different wavelengths which we see as every colour in the spectrum. The colours and patterns in an opal are determined primarily of the silica spheres it contains. This is what gives opals their amazing variety of colours.
